BT gets approval to acquire Pipex

The Sunday Times says that BT have secured regulatory approval should they be successful in a bid to buy Pipex, as a number of others circle - with Virgin Media still seemingly favourites to buy the ADSL provider.

The paper suggests that initial bids for Pipex have been accepted from BT, Sky, Virgin Media and Carphone Warehouse - and Tiscali & Orange are also said to be interested as the market consolidation picks up pace.

One noticeable error in the article:

"BT and Virgin Media, for whom a successful bid for Pipex would mark a first move into DSL broadband, are at the top of the broadband market."

Virgin Media have been in ADSL for some time, with the service that used to be known as Virgin.net.
