Connecticut wants to restrict social networking

The state of Connecticut is the latest to look at restricting access to social networking sites such as MySpace in the wake of safety concerns over younger Internet users.

The proposed bill would require that such sites verify the identity of the person signing up and using the service, and ensure that they have the parents' permission if they are under the age of 18.

With punitive fines of USD$5,000 per day proposed for failure to follow the law, this could create quite a stir, let alone a number of technical issues.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said of the proposition, 'If we can put a man on the moon, we can verify age on the Internet,' but quickly followed with the acknowledgment that there is no foolproof method.
