Google have stated that they will start to encrypt historical search data within their logs, in a move to allay privacy concerns that have been raised with them. This will only apply to search data over 18 to 24 months old, but should help with worries that the search data could be traced back to end users.
Google's deputy general counsel Nicole Wong said:
"We have decided to make this change with feedback from privacy advocates, regulators worldwide and, of course, from our users."The move has generated mixed reactions though, more at the New York Times article.
