Research from Entertainment Media Research (EMR) suggests that users who are currently using P2P networks to download copyrighted music will switch to fully legal solutions should they receive a warning from their ISP - which is exactly what is going to happen after the ISPs agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with copyright holders in July.A survey of 1,500 consumers suggests that 75% of music pirates would stop doing it if they received a warning letter from their ISP. Just over half of the respondents said that they got their music from legal sources.
Younger users are the most active pirates, with 58% of 13-17 year olds stating that they download music illegally.
EMR believes that ISP involvement will get the results. Chief executive Russell Hart said:
"It is quite evident that an ISP-led strategy has bite, because illegal downloaders are fairly convinced that ISPs are currently monitoring their activities and are more likely to act against them than the courts."The survey results will definitely warm the cockles of the people over at the BPI!
