Yahoo!'s search technology is a hot topic of discussion over the last 24 hours - first it's rumoured that Microsoft are in for that part of the business, and now they've announced that they have signed an exclusive deal to provide mobile search for Virgin Mobile's new mobile website (which is set to launch next week). The press release describes the technology as:
Yahoo! oneSearch is specifically designed for the needs of a mobile user, intuitively returning results directly in the first screen, removing the need for consumers to navigate through thousands of links to find the information they want.Speaking of the deal, Virgin Mobile managing director Graham Oxby says:
"Our new Virgin Media mobile portal brings the web to consumers' pockets. A great mobile search service is a crucial part of this and by integrating Yahoo! oneSearch into the portal, we are ensuring our customers have all the information they need at their fingertips. Whether you're checking the Saturday football scores or your favourite web services, you're guaranteed to find what you need with ease."Virgin Media also uses Google search on their main website, as do most UK ISPs.
Update: The new website co-incides with Virgin Mobile launching a 30p per day 'all you can eat' Internet access service for their mobile handset customers. The service comes with a 25MB daily fair use policy - after which subscribers are charged £2 per MB.
