Digital Britain snippets

A couple of other snippets ahead of today's publication of the government's Digital Britain report, and we start with news that report author Lord Carter is set to step down from the government in the summer recess after the report's publication.

Carter, who will be linked with any number of high priority media jobs accordingly, is said to want a "low-key exit". Carter has previously run both Ofcom and NTL before they merged with Telewest to become Virgin Media.

Steve Robertson, the head honcho at BT access division Openreach, has stated that he believes that the minimum service obligation of 2Mb broadband speeds could be achieved over fixed line networks with the investment of "hundreds of millions, not billions" - although it's unclear whether the tax breaks expected in the report will be sufficient.
