Microhoo! deal! finally! announced!

Microsoft and Yahoo! have finally announced a deal to link up their two businesses on search, ending what has been a complete drag of a story that has gone on and on.

Pending regulatory approval - and you expect that Google will be evaluating whether to challenge it - the 10-year deal on web search will implement Microsoft's search technology (from Bing) in the Yahoo! site - and the deal covers about 30% of search traffic across the pond. Yahoo! will sell advertising for Microsoft's online real estate also.

Some had expected that the deal would include some up front payments for Yahoo!, but these did not materialise. Yahoo!'s shares were accordingly down 12% on news of the announcement. In May 2008, Yahoo! turned down a USD$47.5bn takeover attempt from Microsoft.
