A survey by a price comparison site claims that 24% of users of mobile broadband services don't know if they have a limit on their service - and of those that do know, 54% couldn't tell the researchers what the limit actually was. When you consider that some services such as O2 charge £200 for each incremental GB over the usage cap (although they are warned of this via text message), they could be in for a rather nasty shock!
In response to the survey, O2 have defended their position by saying in a statement:
"Very few of our customers ever go over the bundle. The survey only goes to back up the need for mobile broadband to be covered by Ofcom's speed honesty work.
We don't want our customers to have their experience deteriorated by those few customers who are using it to excess, so there are a number of mechanisms that we put in place to ensure that our customers don't go over their allocated limit each month.
We give the customer every opportunity to be aware of how much they're using, and they can upgrade their package at any time.
Thereafter, it's up to them how much they use."
