Three men who allegedly used social engineering techniques to commandeer a domain name used by Comcast are in court on charges that could lead to a 5-year prison sentence and a USD$250,000 fine if they are convicted of the single offence each.Users trying to access comcast.net to access their e-mail or voicemail at the time last year were redirected to a page boasting about the hacker's exploits and containing foul language.
It is alleged that they contacted a Comcast employee the night before the attack to ask some questions about another of their domain names and used the answers to get control of Comcast's DNS administration, subsequently redirecting the domain to servers under their control that contained the offending content.
It's claimed that the incident cost Comcast USD$128,578, which is a very precise figure!
